Famagusta City

The city of Famagusta, also known as Magusa is one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. The town is located on the east coast of Northern Cyprus. Its present state of preservation, is equal to the old cities of Carcassone and Ragusa. Much of the history of the town is obscure as there are no written records and our only source of material is from travellers' accounts of merchants passing through. The amazing city of Famagusta is a great example of characteristic medieval architecture in the world. Famagusta depicts all of historyas every corner of the city is packed with historical places; Salamis ruins, cathedrals, ancient churches and more. Famagusta has one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. Famagusta town was the main market of the Eastern Mediterranean andused as the wealthy merchants’ route and home to many civilizations, notably to the Romans.

The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque originally known as the Saint Nicolas Cathedral and later as the Ayasofya (Saint Sophia) Mosque of Magusa is the largest medieval building in Famagusta, Northern Cyprus. Built between 1298 and c.1400 it was consecrated as a Christian cathedral in 1328. The cathedral was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman Empire captured Famagusta in 1571 and remains a mosque to this day.
