Güzelyurt
Güzelyurt means “beautiful country’ in Turkish. The town of Güzelyurt in the northwest is a charming town with citrus orchards with a population of 12,000. If you come to our island in the period when the trees bloom, you can inhale the scents of citrus fruits.
Güzelyurt is located in one of the richest agricultural areas of Northern Cyprus, famous for its citrus fruits (orange, lemon and grapefruit) and strawberries. Citrus fruits grown in fertile and red soil are quite delicious. Most citrus fruits are exported, the rest is juice and canned for local export. The town was founded by the Spartans worshiping Aphrodite. In the Middle Ages, the city was called Morphou and Theomorphou. Morphou region is the region where more than half of citrus fruits are produced in Cyprus.
You can visit the former Byzantine monastery of St.Mamas, which originally had Gothic institutions. St.Mamas is known as the patron saint of taxpayers.
